Bioarcheology workshop

“We are all made like a tree, and when we die, the only thing that remains is our skeleton. This will allow the future generations to know about our living conditions and the reasons why we die”.

That is what we learnt on 26th November when three bioarcheologists from Durham University came to the high school to tell us about bioarcheology. They were called Simone, Clair and Kary and came from 3 different countries: the U.K. , the U.S.A and the Netherlands. Therefore they had different accents which were more or less easy to understand ! What surprised us was their cleverness, knowledge and their passion for what they were doing despite their young age.

First of all, we think that it is important to remind you of the definition of bioarcheology : it is the investigation of the past through the study of skeletons.

The workshop started with a one-hour explanation. Each of them specialized in a different field of bioarcheology. Simone studies bones and microscopy, she explains how a bone is made and in fact it’s like a tree. Kary is keen on paleopathology, the study of diseases in the past. Clair studies anatomy and age estimation. After that the workshop started.

“To conclude, we didn’t expect such an interesting workshop and it was a rich experience !”

Elise and Flora
